1-1/4″ NPT vs 1-1/4″ BSPT

Same nominal size, two different standards. Side by side at this size only.

Will they work together? No They will cross-thread within two turns.

1-1/4″ NPT has 11.5 TPI and 1-1/4″ BSPT has 11 TPI. The pitches are close enough to start and far enough apart to bind almost immediately. Forcing it past that point strips the softer of the two parts, which is usually the fitting you did not want to replace.

Telling them apart before you assemble

Both threads are tapered at the same 1 in 16, so taper is no help here. Two things are:

Count the threads over one inch. 11.5 means NPT, 11 means BSPT. At this size the counts differ, so this test is reliable if you count carefully over a full inch rather than eyeballing.

Look at the crest of the thread under magnification. NPT crests are flat, cut off square. BSPT crests are rounded. This works at every size and is the test that never lies, but it needs a loupe and decent light.

If it is already assembled and weeping, do not keep tightening. Both of these are tapered threads, so every additional turn wedges harder against a female fitting that is not shaped to take it. Brass and cast iron split. Back it out, identify both halves properly, and use an adapter.

What to use instead

A 1-1/4″ NPT to 1-1/4″ BSPT adapter, with the correct thread cut on each end. They are inexpensive and standard stock. Do not attempt to make one thread work in the other by adding more PTFE tape — tape fills the spiral leak path along a correctly matched thread, it does not compensate for a five degree flank mismatch.
